Leadership and Mentoring: The Weight of "The First" and "The Only"

The weight of being "the first" or "the only" in leadership can feel overwhelming. When others have created or lead repeated initiatives they create or fine-tune a blueprint or a map that can be followed. When you are the only or the first, there is a weight that comes with leading out front that is excited or also with a feeling of uncertainty. This is where mentoring can affirm a leader who is the first or only to start or create a new model or do something new and different.

This can be an even more challenging experience for black women leaders. As a Black woman leading in the nonprofit space, I've carried this weight but I've learned to transform it into an opportunity to create support and mentoring for other firsts, onlys and other women business leaders.

I have created the Awakening The Warriors mentorship program for women to connect with and support other women because representation isn't just about being visible—it's about creating pathways for others to follow.

Our monthly meetings also taps into the load that comes with leading. Last month, we our warrior women participated in a wellness session. Leaders, and service providers need care, and balance. Women who attend our warrior lunches serve and lead in various sectors. Making time for care during our sessions give each women the time to replenish, and restore. Women leaders bring unique solutions to our community's challenges, that is why as a mentor I listen and provide practical, support resources that women can apply to their personal lives, their business and for the community.
