I’ve been raised watching my mother serving others. Initially, I didn’t think it had an impact on me as I’ve seen her do it all my life. Then we moved to the United States from Dominica. I was introduced to poverty in the United States as a sophomore in high school. I never knew such poverty or homelessness existed.
During college I continued serving as a tutor to students and at crisis centers. It was during my service at these centers that I came to learn about one of many crisis situations that our neighbors and peers endure hiding in plain sight within our communities.
