Child Marriage is Legal in The United States: Protect Women and Girls

March 3, 2021 By TheVillageLady Leave a Comment

*triggering content**

Women and girls around the world and in the United States continue to experience abuse at significantly higher rates than men. Child marriage, a form of abuse that was once widely accepted is getting much-needed attention to put an end to the practice.

Sadly, child marriage is still widely practiced in the United States. Girls as young as 11-years old are and have been allowed to legally be married often, to adult men, with their parent’s permission.

In the United States alone, more than 200,000 minors were married between 2000 and 2015; most were girls, more than 80% were married to an adult male. -FRONTLINE

To date, only four states have completely banned underage marriages. Some states have minimum age requirements, but built-in loopholes that include parental consent can circumvent the requirement. The Tahirih Justice Center a national, non-profit organization that aims to end violence against women and girls shared, “18 states, still have no age “floor,” meaning that as long as exceptions ate met, a child of any age can be married.”

Reports have highlighted that some parents, who want to avoid the stigma of their daughters becoming pregnant out of wedlock, are more inclined to give parental consent for their underage daughters to get married.

Sadly, child brides often get stuck in a continuous cycle of abuse. Typically, they “cannot get divorced because they are underage, many women shelters will not take anyone underage and landlords will not rent to minors.” -SherryJohnson

Usually when we see women who have escaped this series of abuse their trauma has been compounded.

This is happening and it is probably legal in your state. Young girls and women are hurting. Get active. Get involved. Protect women and girls.

Serving Women

February 18, 2019 By TheVillageLady Leave a Comment

This is one of the most frequently asked questions.

It was about 20 degrees outside, I bumped into a father and his daughter, they were desperate. He was looking for a safe place for his daughter to have her baby.

I’ve met with wives who have been abandoned by their husbands. There are times when the husband doesn’t want or believe they can afford another child and he kicks his wife out of the house because she refuses to terminate.

I’ve spoken to young girls who are madly in love with their boyfriends and will choose the boyfriend over the comforts of their parents home. The boyfriend doesn’t have a home, so they live in tents, in the woods or in shelters and she survives by holding on to his love.

I’ve met with women fleeing abusive relationships.

I’ve also listened to women who, at the pleas of friends and family have relocated to the area, when she shows up pregnant, no one takes her in because it’s a burden.

Who are the women we help and where do they come from?

They are your neighbors. They are women in your church. They are students at your school and daughters from wealthy households. They are people in need of love and renewed chances.

I help all the women I can. To learn more about the work I’m involved in, visit Carried To Full Term.

Motivation and Commitment Facilitates Change!

February 17, 2019 By TheVillageLady Leave a Comment

In my experience, the change we seek will be dependent on what motivates us and our level of commitment.

If our motivation is to find fault, then fault we will find.

If it’s to make a political statement, then many statements will be made.

If it’s to seek perfection, then nothing will be accomplished.

If our commitment is to invest in a life and to support an individual even after their story rips every ounce of air from our being and leaves us breathless, then we become the change makers.

When the very people we’ve committed to help turns on us and even rejects our help, when they leave us abruptly and we’re left mourning the sudden loss, yet we stay committed, we’ve become facilitators of change.

To those of us who have planted the seeds, and to the ones who came after and watered the garden, a blossom IS coming. To those who have remained to tend the garden, be encouraged.

The fruits of your hard work have already shown itself to be good, very good. Be encouraged!

Expanded Mission

December 1, 2018 By TheVillageLady Leave a Comment

The initial mission at Carried To Full Term was to provide housing and to help mothers become independent and self-sufficient. Along the way, we observed patterns that needed to be broken. As a result, the mission was broadened to include breaking cycles of poverty.  The task is broader, and the mission is greater but we believe the effort is worth improving the lives of our families and future generations.

I am reminded of the verse in Ephesians that says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” The support from our community, churches, and friends, allows the work of stabilizing and protecting families from abandonment and homelessness to continue. I am thankful to God for his favor and the support and growth experienced throughout the years.
